MARY AMELIA LONDON’S SELFIE ART PHOTOBOOTH
My Selfie Art Photobooth is an interactive activation that playfully explores participants’ experiences as consumers of art and users of social media.
The project offers an opportunity for physical participation in a virtual photobooth, with subsequent posting and reposting of the resulting portraits on social media as part of an exclusive community of those who have received the ‘blessing of the booth’.
This ongoing participatory work series debuted at the RCA2023 degree show and is manned by myself, in booth-attendant’s attire, ready to encourage, photograph, chat to and post portraits of participants. I am armed with a giant aubergine emoji on a stick (just because: the jester’s pig’s bladder de nos jours), and the booth is equipped with a range of custom-made, hand-painted, witty cardboard signs and other props to enhance participants’ selfies to comic - and poignant - effect. Photos taken in the booth are shared online on social media during the project and reshared by participants.
This is an intervention suitable for all kinds of arts and non-arts venues, events and audiences, from galleries to community arts projects, corporate events to weddings or arty parties. It can be adapted to different locations and audiences, and custom signs and props can be hand made for individual events and audiences.
People love coming to the booth. They love participating in the work, and the validation and sense of community that it offers in an alienating and atomised world.
